Google Assistant left Android phones in September 2026. How to set a reminder with Gemini, where your old reminders went, and what stopped working.
From 4 September 2026, Google started removing Google Assistant from Android phones, tablets, Wear OS watches, headphones and Android Auto. Gemini now handles "remind me" requests. By late September the "Switch to Google Assistant" option was gone from the Gemini app, so there is no going back on a phone. Cars with Google built-in still have Assistant.
Gemini doesn't keep reminders itself. It saves them in Google Tasks, or in Samsung Reminder on Galaxy phones.
The alert comes from the app that saved the reminder: Google Tasks, or Samsung Reminder on a Galaxy phone. If Gemini used Google Tasks and the Tasks app isn't installed, the alert comes from Google Calendar. Check that notifications are on for that app, and that battery saving isn't stopping it in the background.
Reminders at a place. "Remind me when I get home" no longer works in any Google app. Assistant dropped location reminders first. When Keep reminders moved to Tasks, Keep's location reminders stopped too, and the place was kept only as text in the task's description. Google Tasks has never had them. If you need one, you need an app outside Google's: Samsung Reminder on Galaxy phones has them, and so do TickTick and Tasks.org.
Reminders from Messages. As above, Gemini in Google Messages can't set them.
Nudge is our app. It's an assistant for your tasks that keeps checking in until they're done. It doesn't plug into Gemini or "Hey Google": you open Nudge and tell it what you need in plain words, typed or spoken, and it creates the task and picks the reminder times.
On Android, a reminder has Done, Remind me in 15, Not today and a reply box on the notification. If a deadline passes and the task isn't done, Nudge keeps checking back: with the default setting, the next day, day 3, day 7 and day 14, then once a week while it's still open, between 8am and 9pm your time. Any task can also ring as a real alarm. On Android 14 and later, Android asks you to allow "Alarms & reminders" for Nudge the first time.
Nudge doesn't do reminders at a place either.
Nudge uses task context, the details you share about your day, connected calendar availability, and quiet hours to choose when to follow up.
